Dots was first performed by Psappha Ensemble conducted by Leo Geyer on the 4th of January 2015 at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation (Manchester).
Dots is a homage to the witty poem Words Getting in the Way by Anthony Burgess. In his work, the protagonist, overwhelmed by the complexity of language, is unable to express his love, reflecting on Burgess’s tongue in cheek attitude in both his life and work. In my piece, the poem is retold with the notated music ‘getting in the way’. I have also brought out the physical suggestions in the poem by modelling the composition on the lively and sensual Cuban dance – Guaguanco. As well as musical characteristics from Latin America, I have also drawn upon jazzy flavours featured in a number of compositions by Anthony Burgess.
Dots is available to purchase for £30.00 excluding postage.
